Comemoration of the Moudjahid National Day (20 august)
The Embassy of Algeria in Budapest organized a ceremony to commemorate the Moudjahid National Day (20 August), which represents the double anniversary of the “North Constantinois Offensive (20 August 1955) and the Soummam Congress (20 August 1956).”
After the raising of the colors accompanied by the national anthem and the observance of a minute's silence in tribute to the Algerian martyrs, His Excellency Mr Abdelhafid Alahaoum, the Algerian Ambassador to Budapest, recalled the symbolism of these two crucial moments in the history of the national liberation war, which contributed to the internationalization of the Algerian cause, on one hand, and to the structuring of the national struggle, on the other hand.
He pointed out that the 1955 North Constantinois offensive against colonial targets in Constantine, Guelma, Skikda, and Collo was responsible for the inclusion of the Algerian question on the agenda of the UN General Assembly in September 1955, as an issue of decolonization and not an internal affair as presented by the French colonialism.
This offensive also paved the way for the Soummam Congress, held on 20 August 1956. This congress was a major structuring act of the Algerian revolution since it enabled the national struggle to be organized and gave it not only a national and revolutionary foundation but also an international presence.
His Excellency, the Algerian Ambassador to Budapest, took the opportunity to call on the members of the Algerian community in Hungary to continue to close ranks and strengthen the foundations of an Algeria confident in its future.
He pointed out that the presidential elections on 7 September 2024 offer every Algerian the opportunity to contribute to the future of Algeria ‘Voting is not just a duty, it is a noble act of citizenship and a responsibility towards the party to choose competence, integrity, probity and rectitude’, he added.
His Excellency the Ambassador also assured that all available means would be deployed to provide a quality service to members of the national community in Hungary and to make it easier for them to carry out their electoral duty in the best conditions.
