Algeria registers the Gandoura, the Melhefa and the Caftan and else among the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

On December 4, 2024, UNESCO officially added to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity the dossier presented by Algeria, titled: “Women’s Ceremonial Costume of Eastern Algeria: Knowledge and Skills Related to the Creation of Jewelry – Gandoura and Melhefa.”

This dossier highlights an exceptional tradition of clothing and craftsmanship, showcasing the richness of Algerian cultural heritage. It includes an extensive list of iconic garments such as the Gandoura, Caftan, and Melhefa, as well as the traditional jewelry that complements these outfits, along with the knowledge and craftsmanship required for their creation and design.

With this recognition, Algeria continues to promote its cultural heritage on the global stage. This achievement adds to previous successes, including the inscription of Raï music, recognized by UNESCO as a significant element of Algerian culture, as well as the Caftan of the "Chedda" of Tlemcen, previously inscribed.

These accomplishments reinforce Algeria's commitment to preserving and transmitting its rich intangible heritage while affirming its active role in the international community’s efforts to safeguard cultural traditions.
